We had dinner at Blue Hill, which is the Manhattan location of a farm-to-table restaurant in the Hudson Valley. The menu is either a 5 course chef's tasting or a 4 course with options for each course. I had a curried zucchini to start, so flavorful and delicious. The second course was a mixed grain risotto. Third course was pig five ways, each portion of the pig was divine including one section with a delicious grape sauce and a perfect belly with crisp skin. Dessert was peach with a light as air hazelnut sponge cake and a yogurt ice cream that put all other frozen yogurts to shame.
On Tuesday, I took advantage of one of the luckiest coincidences of my life. I happened to be in NY during the retirement week for Wendy Whelan. She is one of my favourite ballet dancers, although I have only been able to see her perform a few times over recent years. During her last week, she is dancing the After The Rain pas de deux, on the night I saw her with Craig Hall. This is a piece choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon for her and Jock Soto. The music is to Arvo Part's Spiegel im Spiegel. For this performance, the violin and piano were on the stage, just to the left. This is one of the most melancholy, beautiful pieces of music and the performance was amazing. She has the ability of making any dance she does seem completely natural and organic, not like she's performing someone else's steps. It was truly a blessing to have been in town to see her this week.
