Cedar Lake returns to UCLA

Cedar Lake was in town the weekend I got back from Guatemala. They were so fantastic the last time they were in town, I had to see them again. This year they did three pieces, each with a very different feel. The first piece was the most balletic, danced to mostly Paganini (with a bit of techno thrown in) and the dancing was wonderfully musical. It reminded me of some of Mark Morris' work. The middle piece had a very dystopian feel, everyone was dressed similarly so that you couldn't tell the men from the women and the entire piece had a creepy feel to it. The final piece was incredibly funny, such a rarity in dance. The soundtrack was a pretentious man's voice describing what the dancers are doing, but in the most intellectual incomprehensible way possible, while the dancers are moving in a wordless comedy.
This company has such amazing, strong dancers. It was a joy to watch them in all three pieces. This is also one of the few companies that I know of in the US that works with contemporary choreographers (in the way that European companies like NDT do) and it's exhilarating to watch. They are based in NYC and supported by a WalMart heiress, so kudos to her!
